And she sobbed

I’m a coward. I admit it. I’ve been kinda sorta avoiding my elderly neighbor because I knew that she’d take it hard that we are moving. Well, she found out. I stopped back at the house to change and pick up the kids from school and in the heat she came out on her porch and called me over. As I walked closer I could see that she was crying. It was heartbreaking. I came up on the porch and she all but begged me not to leave her. I didn’t know what to say so I just held her head to my chest as she sobbed for about 20 minutes straight. I couldn’t calm her down and she just kept crying and crying. She said that when she found out we were moving she cried all night and prayed for the Good Lord to take her. She said that she prayed to God so she could see her husband again and not have to endure us leaving her.

I finally calmed her down before she seemed like she was going to get sick from the heat and the tears. She begged me not to forget her and I assured her that we love her very much and that I’d never forget her. It’s the truth. She’s seen me bring home three children and helped me through the loss of Victoria. She loves my kids as if they were her great-grandchildren and adores seeing them when they visit with her. When we first moved here and became friends I knew that once she and her husband were gone that it would be time to move. I didn’t think that we’d end up having to leave before she passed.

At first she didn’t understand why we were going but after I explained to her that I was moving in with my mom and taking care of her she looked at me and said that my mom comes first now. Sigh. I love that woman like family and feel like I’ve just put a stake in her heart. She takes everything so hard and I knew she wouldn’t take this well.

Dammit. This just keeps getting worse.
