Well, that settles that
Yesterday was a beautiful day as far the weather was concerned so I decided to putz around in the front yard weeding and watering my flowers after we picked Iz up from my mom’s. As I was watering I noticed our neighbor across the street and decided to be friendly and see how things were going. They had put their home up for sale after buying another in a neighboring city for a great deal and finally sold so I asked him how things worked out. He knew we were planning on selling soon so he came over to share.
They have a home that’s similar in size but it’s a bungalow rather than a ranch like ours. They have a nicer kitchen since they remodeled it before they moved in but otherwise we’re in the same general ball park. When I found out they sold I was happy, naturally. What I found out yesterday makes me not so happy. It does, however, make it unofficially official as to whether or not we’ll build or buy my mother’s house.
What makes me unhappy, you wonder? The fact that they sold their home for almost $20k below what we owe on our home (which isn’t an inflated amount by any stretch). They needed to wash their hands of the house and did. Luckily for them they didn’t lose out on money per se since they owed less than they sold for but I think they pretty much broke even. This of course means that they’ve yanked the property values down so even if we tried to refi we’d be up shit’s creek. Fun!
I still have to email the builder but I’m loathing it. I know it’s just business but still. Ideally I would’ve wanted to give him the business and all of us win in the deal. I’m sure he’s suffering in business because of the current state of things but we just can’t go into this and put our home at risk. With the way things are going right now, it wouldn’t be smart to go ahead with the build. We can instead remodel my mom’s kitchen somewhat and do things as we go along. Outside of needing some updates, it’s a solid, beautiful home.
Sigh.
The more I think about this, the more anxiety I feel. Man, I could use a donut.
