Breakin’ the law

Radar GunIf it were rumored to exist any flaws in this seemingly perfect veneer, it would be that I like to drive just a touch too fast. I’m not reckless nor do I put anyone’s life in danger; I just simply like to move somewhat faster than my fellow drivers. As adept as I normally am at avoiding run-ins with the men in blue, this was not my experience today.

I was on my way from summer music class to Izzie’s gymnastics camp in that sickeningly suburban-mom-on-the-run way when I decided to take my usual shortcut. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I did realize that the speed limit was lower than the speed at which I was driving. I will not disclose how fast I was going nor will I confess the speed limit but rest assured this was not a residential area nor an area where any children would be playing. This was an industrial area and apparently the speed limit was lowered because there are a lot of trucks that pull in and out.

The ticket the officer could have written me would have resulted in a few points on my record and when the insurance company would have found out, they would have taken a pound of flesh for sure. I know I’m making this sound like I was going 50 in a 15 but I wasn’t. The penalties are on the stiff side in my city. Instead of writing the ticket for speeding, the officer wrote me up for Impeding Traffic (I’m not sure exactly what that means) which results in no points and there is no blemish on my record. I assume he was more lenient because I have a clean record, everyone was buckled up and I wasn’t belligerent.

So, all happy and good, right? Well, not exactly. This little escapade will set me back a cool $150. Yeah, that hurts. Oh well. I’m the dumbass who was speeding. Oh, and by the way, it’s really fun getting pulled over with your kids in the back reprimanding you for not obeying the letter of the law. Brats. Next time I’ll offer them up in restitution!

Oh sure. You’re stupid cops give you a break, yet I get ticketed for turning left, 10 minutes too late, in an intersection where it’s not even clearly marked?

    Bite me.
